These cars are so customizable so some blur the line, some are a cross of multiple designations. It’s mostly age and atyling that sets them apart.
Rat Rod : Usually ‘20s-’30s, body covered in rust or primer, gutted interior, slammed.
Street Rod : Typically a Ford Deuce coupe or roadster though others from the era apply. Exposed chrome engine, blower on top, bright paintwork, slammed, large rear tires.
Lead Sled : 1950 Mercury (or other similar car). Bright or flat paintwork, slammed, chop top, lake pipes.
Street Machine : Usually 1966-1973 muscle cars. Bright or flat paintwork, large blown V8, large rear tires.
And any one of these four were customized for performance, then it’s a Hot Rod alongside its other name.
...then stick a V12 aircraft engine in one and it changes completely!

Although the Australians seem to out-America the Americans when it comes to crazy street machines.

Your definition of street Rod is slightly off, a street Rod is taking say a bone stock 32 ford and modernizing the drivetrain and some of the interior for better driving use but keeping the stock look so full hoods and fenders with cowl lights and bumpers as well. A hot rod is the stripped down no hood or fenders and a built motor.
Leads lead was actually a derogatory term originally. It was the “rice” of the 50s usually meaning a car with really terrible custom work. It has morphed into what it is today mainly referring to 49-51 Chopped Mercs but really any of the shoebox designs of the late 40s early 50s work.

Was a lead in style then fell out fairly quickly? The idea is fine but the execution was off?

No lead was the bondo of the 50s so a lead sled was a car just full of filler instead of proper metal work.

All just as ridiculous and dangerously modded as the stancebros..but with out the blind hate from every corner of the car community.

“Rat Rod : Usually ‘20s-’30s, body covered in rust or primer, gutted interior, slammed”
Close. But a Rat can be almost any car. Not including Craigslist finds. Rats blur the Street, Hot Rod and Muscle Car lines. They’re the automotive equivalent of Tribal Tatoos.
